It is your mother who brings you to see the light of this world. It is she who looks after the helpless you and serves you with all her heart and does everything to make your life comfortable. Just for a day, at least, we shall stop taking our mothers for granted.

Mother's Day is one occasion that gives you the opportunity to do something for your mother. And if you start wondering about the reasons you need to treat your mother, you would end up with nothing less than a zillion reasons. Let's just remember the most important reasons for which we need to be grateful to our mom and that would be enough to arrange a lavish treat for her on the special occasion of Mother's Day.

* Since your childhood you have watched your mom washing and ironing your clothes, keeping your school uniform sparkling and spotless, and your jumpers without a single crease.

* You have been lucky enough to be picked and dropped to and from your school every single day right form your first day at school.

* Whenever you had a fight and for the slightest reason or if you needed a reason to cry on someone's shoulders, your mom was the one giving you the comfort and patiently listening to all your heartburns and grumbling.

* Just remember the innumerable times you wanted a fresh new set of designer clothes and your mother dug out her pocket money to fulfill your wish.

* The food world in which you gorged ever since you were a child and grew up on, was cooked day in and day out by your beloved mother. Just think of the hundreds of incredible dishes she prepared for you, the tasty lunchboxes she fixed for you, the cakes she baked, the snacks, the cups of tea and delicious suppers. It surely makes your mouth water even now.

* Your mother is always there for you through every thick-and-thin of your life. She is the person you can depend upon to stand by you anytime you need her.

* Remember all those difficult undecided moments of life and you needed someone who could make you see reason and pour some worldly-wise advice in your ears. It was surely your mother who lent you patient ears and then pulled you out of the mess in your life.

* Think about the tons of love she professes for you everyday through all her acts, big and small. It can't even be measured. It can only be felt.

What your mother does for you is absolutely beyond assessment but when the enormity of her love and sacrifice is felt you realize that surely your mom deserves a special treat this Mother's Day. It would only be a small way to show your gratefulness to her.

Nicest Things You Can Do To Treat Your Mom

From a survey that was conducted a couple of years ago, a few nice things that you can do to treat your mom has been listed.

* I found out that my mother's favorite singing star is Neil Diamond. So I somehow procured two concert tickets that too in the front row, with the help of my uncle and took my mom to hear the famous person sing.
-Christina

* I have noticed quite a few times my mother lamenting on the fact that she does not have any pictures of her parents in the house. They had died years ago. So I contacted my mother's relatives and finally got a copy from Aunt Hilda. I took pains in restoring the picture mounted it up on a beautiful ornamental framework and kept it in my mother's room. This made her exceptionally happy.
-Rose

* My Mom was very sick and had only three to four months to live. I was too young to marry then. But then it was her last wish. So I went ahead and got married and she got to see her grandchild, my daughter, before she died. This was the nicest thing I could do for my mom.
-Amy

* I had two brothers and one sister. We were all married and settled at the far off corners. Mother's Day was approaching and we heard my mom was sick and was in bed for a week or more. So I made all the plans and arrangements and gave her the most pleasant surprise on the Mother's Day. We just dropped in to be with her for a couple of days. She cried for ages for it had been quite long that she got to see all her children together around her absolutely doting over her and pampering her.
-Susan

* A long time ago my parents had gone for a vacation and I did a splendid thing. My mother thinks of it fondly even today, even after so many years. I had the whole kitchen painted in nice bright colors and had it decorated beautifully.
-Cecelia

Be thoughtful for your mom always and treat your mother like a princess everyday. That can be the most wonderful gift to your mom.

* Rosa Parks was the mother of bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama that launched the Civil Rights Movement.

* Mother Shipton was a Prophetess in Britain 500 years ago. She could see the future, and predicted that another Queen Elizabeth would sit on the throne of England. (QE II)

* Mother's Day is now celebrated in many countries around the world. Australia, Mexico, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Belgium, Russia, China, Thailand, all have special celebrations to honor Mothers, but not in the same way or on the same day as the United States.

* Eve is credited with being the "Mother of All the Living", in the Bible,

* Mother Goose is one of the most popular of all children's entertainers. Her books and stories have been loved for many generations.

* Mother Earth is also known as "Terra Firma". That title is a Latin translation of some lines from one of the Greek poet, Homer's, greatest

* 52 % of the words for mother in the material have ma/me/mo or na/ne/no in the root syllable poems.

The history of Mother's Day is centuries old and goes back to the times of ancient Greeks, who held festivities to honor Rhea, the mother of the gods. The early Christians celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. The English colonists settled in America discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday because of lack of time. In 1872 Julia Ward Howe organized a day for mothers dedicated to peace. It is a landmark in the history of Mother's Day.

In 1907, Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948), a Philadelphia schoolteacher, began a movement to set up a national Mother's Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She solicited the help of hundreds of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day to honor mothers. The first Mother's Day observance was a church service honoring Anna's mother. Anna handed out her mother's favorite flowers, the white incarnations, on the occasion as they represent sweetness, purity, and patience. Anna's hard work finally paid off in the year 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers.

Slowly and gradually the Mother's day became very popular and gift giving activity increased. All this commercialization of the Mother's day infuriated Anna as she believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit.

Regardless of Jarvis's worries, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. Actually, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year. Although Anna may not be with us but the Mother's day lives on and has spread to various countries of the world. Many countries throughout the world celebrate Mother's Day at various times during the year, but some such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.

Mothering Sunday

The early Christians in England celebrated the Mother's festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter) to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Interestingly, later on a religious order stretched the holiday to include all mothers, and named it as the Mothering Sunday. People working out of their homes were expected to return to the "mother" church (the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm). It also became an occasion for family reunions. Besides attending church services in honor of the Virgin Mary, children (particularly those working as domestic servants, or as trainees, being given the day off to visit their mother and family) used to come back home with gifts, flowers, and unique Mothering Day cakes and spend the day with their mothers. Today, the Mother's Day is a day when children give presents, flowers, and home made cards to their mothers to express their love.

Roses are popular. Everyone knows that. But did you ever wonder more about the "meaning of roses?" I mean -- "what exactly am I telling someone when I send them "x" number of a certain color of roses?

Before I get to the meanings of the various colors of roses, and even the number of them that you send, let's have a brief history of the rose...

Roses are believed to be native to the western United States. Fossils of roses have been discovered in Montana but they have been recorded thoughout history all over the world.

The ancient Romans used roses in festivals. Roses petals were mixed with wine for a decandent flavour or petals were showered over guests to give them a warm welcome.

In Egypt it is belived the Cleopatra kept rose filled pillows in her boudoir and once recieved Mark Anthony in a room knee deep in rose petals. Yup. history proves that the rose has always been revered as a symbol for the celebration of love.

The rose is also the national flower of the United States and symbolizes the birth month of June. The rose is recognized around the world for its scent and beauty.

Did you know that every different colour of rose has a distinct meaning? Yup... so you'd better know what message you are sending before you send it!

Here's a breakdown of each colour and its meaning...

RED: I love you

PINK: Grace and elegance, happiness, and also an expression of admiration

YELLOW: Friendship

WHITE: Purity and innocence

ORANGE: Desire and enthusiam or secret love

LAVENDER: Enchantment or love at first sight

PEACH: Sympathy or gratitude or modesty and sincerity

BLACK: Death

CHAMPAGNE: Lasting beauty

Even the way roses are arranged can convay something to the recipient. For instance...

Two roses joined together with a ribbon represents engagement. Red and white roses arranged toghether means unity.

And guess what? Even the number of roses you give to someone also has meaning. Take a look...

1 rose: Love at first sight

2 roses: Deeply in love

3 roses: I love you

6 roses: I want to be yours

9 roses: Eternal love

10 roses: You are perfect

11 roses: You are treasured, the one I love the most

12 roses: Be my steady

13 roses: Secret admirer

15 roses: I am sorry, please forgive me

20 roses: Please belive me

21 roses: I am devoted to you

24 roses: I am always thinking of you

33 roses: I love you with great affection

36 roses: I will remember our romantic moments

40 roses: My love is genuie

50 roses: Regretless love

99 roses: I will love you for as long as I live

100 roses: Always together until we grow old

101 roses: You are my one and only love

365 roses: I think of you everyday

999 roses: Everlasting eternal love (now that can be expensive!).

I bet you never thought the colour and the number of roses you send could mean so much? Well... now you know!

Blooming like a flower!

Blooming like a flower!
